FAQ
Who is this institute for?
This institute is designed for: classroom teachers, specialty teachers, social studies teachers, humanities teachers, STEM teachers, coaches, administrators or any educator who teaches content that touches upon history. This institute is for people who want to learn more Black history content, methods for inclusive history instruction, strategies for teaching joyful as well as unsettling truths about Black history throughout the year, awareness of the role identity plays in history teaching/learning and a framework applicable to all history instruction. And, we are excited to share, new for 2025, we are now exclusively offering this institute to schools, districts and communities!
Why should a learning community invite the Teach Black History All Year Institute team?
While this institute was wildly successful when open to the public, we frequently found participants with specific concerns, questions or needs specific to their community. Whether this was because of staff or student demographics, resources, state teaching guidelines, or larger community considerations, it became increasingly clear that we needed to shift this professional development opportunity to be site-based. When we come to a community, whether virtually or in person, while the main pillars remain the same as our publicly presented institutes, we are able to tailor the institute’s content, pace, methods and more to your community.
I teach high school. I teach preschool. Would this institute be right for me?
Yes. While this institute was originally designed for K-8 educators we have discovered in our community-based iteration that the principles and framework designed for the original institute apply to any grade range. Please let us know when you contact us about your age range and needs.
The content I am required to teach doesn’t include topics typically involving Black history. Will I find this institute useful?
We believe so. One of the purposes of this institute is to disrupt the notion of historical time periods being framed by dominant narratives. We aim to support educators in crafting more inclusive, complete, and truthful content instruction. We will build upon the demands of your current instructional resources and expectations.
I can’t make every minute of the virtual institute. Will it be recorded? Can we get access to the recordings?
The main content of every session will be recorded and made available to all registered participants for one week after the date of the session. We will not be recording the parts of the sessions that include participant activities or discussions.
Is there a syllabus?
Yes! Since the institute includes several hours of content, it reflects that level of content and not that of a full semester graduate course. You can download it here.
Will there be certificates of attendance available?
Yes. We will be taking attendance each day and have certificates available reflecting attendance hour completion upon request.
